1. Boston-area creative entrepreneurs! Boston Art Makers is looking for new members! We meet up regularly to share resources and build skills in support of our creative work, and 'cause it's fun to socialize with other makers. So much learning comes from shooting the breeze in person! See Boston Art Makers membership page for details. Plan on having a great time with other members of Boston Art Makers.
2. I am taking a break from felt bowls and the rather stubborn wools I'd been using to make them. The Coopworth, Corriedale and Cormo wools made bowls with nice heft and structure, but the fibers took a long time to come together. I'm now using Merino, the feltmaker's favorite, to make a series of brooches. I'm experimenting with sculpting out irregular shapes with lots of holes, somewhat reminiscent of coral or lotus flower seeds. I have lots of commercially dyed Merino roving and it's refreshing to break out all the colors. I plan to machine stitch these pieces to add more shape and structure.
3. I wrote a short post at Boston Art Makers about why I plan to make a lot of brooches this year. Read it here! And see another picture of brooches in process of being made.
